Matthew Knies tried a nice little Michigan-style goal the other night and while he wasn't successful, has admitted it's not his first rodeo when it comes to trying.
Leave it Matthew Knies to score a college-style goal, as the former NCAA standout certainly had his experiences while skating as a member of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers; often regarded as one of, if not
the best program in collegiate hockey.Attempting the "Michigan"; a goal that involves an obscene amount of hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Bringing the puck flat to the blade, the goal is to wrap around and pot the goal over the shoulder of the goalie. It's been successful several times before, but more often than not is just a good attempt.
Matthew's Trip To Michigan Doesn't Go As Planned
Knies failed in his quest to score a highlight reel goal, however wasn't shy about admitting that he really wanted it to go in, and it wasn't his first time trying to amaze everyone:
The puck was kind of rolling so I thought it was a good opportunity there to do it. That's probably the closest I've ever come. It kind of sucks that it didn't go in there.
However, when Knies mentioned he tried the move in college, he relented that "a few" really wasn't that many truthfully through a cheeky smile:
By 'a few times' I mean probably twice.
If he isn't able to score on a Michigan, then he can probably just stick to what's worked this season, being a lightning rod and providing solid screens, tips, and the ability to fire at will with great success.
This season,
Knies has 52 points in 72 games (26G, 26A) along with a staggering 178 hits; showing just how important he is to the team in only his second full campaign.
Being one of only a few players in the entirety of the NHL with 25+ goals and 150+ hits, Knies is going to be a phenom for years to come, even without the Michigan in his arsenal.
The only question is, with restricted free agency on the horizon and a potential to be lured away:
When is Matthew Knies going to sign with the Maple Leafs and lead the future of the team after the
Auston Matthews era?
