Mats Sundin is buying a house in Toronto and the Maple Leafs GM coming with him is not who most fans expected

Mats Sundin for President? That may be the goal as the former Leaf is looking at making his home in Toronto; and who he could bring along is also quite the surprise.
News around the water cooler recently has been whether or not Mats Sundin is going to take a job with the Toronto Maple Leafs or not. There was talks about an advisor role, but rumours are he wants a bigger role and the team is waiting for his decision before they do anything.
If he does make the decision to join the team though, it does open up a realm of possibilities that could lead to a wave of changes in hockey's most recognizable market. Sundin is someone who cares deeply about the state of the franchise and he won't let any lackadaisical efforts get past him.
However, that's a big if. Sundin doesn't necessarily have the experience and if Keith Pelley and MLSE don't want to relinquish some of their power, he could be passed by.
But there may be some hope if Nick Kypreos is to be believed.
Sundin settling in? Nick Kypreos seems to think that's the case
Taking things with a couple of grains of salt, Kypreos made mention that Sundin was reportedly in the Toronto market and looking at housing options, which would clearly signify a move to the city and a job all but assuredly being offered:
I’d heard whispers Mats Sundin has started looking for a house [in Toronto]. But as far as the job description goes, it’s still up for debate between him and Keith Pelley.
But not only that, it was then noted by Elliotte Friedman that the Sundin hiring would also come with its own GM; that being John Chayka:
I believe if he says yes, it's a Mats Sundin, John Chayka combination.
And on top of that, TSN's Mike Johnson spoke to Sundin during the Olympics and stated that the former captain wasn't shy about the things the Leafs needed to do to get back on track:
He has some opinions, they’re not weak about what the Leafs need to do. He has some thoughts. I would want to hear what he has to say.
That's a trio of well-connected insiders and analysts who are all saying the same thing — Sundin could be the answer, he just needs to pick up the phone.
Could a Sundin/Chayka partnership work in Toronto?
If you're going to have Sundin at the forefront and the leader of the new management group, then adding Chayka would be a pretty solid get, though there may be some reservations from fans.
Despite a bit of a controversial past, Chayka is someone who is that analytical darling the Maple Leafs want, and the fact that Sundin would be the filter is a good way to make sure that the moves made help both the culture and the on-ice product.
If Sundin has some big ideas about where the team needs to go, then he needs someone like Chayka to do so. He's not shy about making big deals or trading for stars; and with how bad Brad Treliving was anything is an improvement.
Still only 36, Chayka represents a youth movement that the Maple Leafs need to follow up with behind the bench and adding someone like Manny Malhotra or Misha Donskov would be a great way to inject a new game plan and some life into the lineup — and both men work with analytics.
At the end of the day, as much power as Sundin has, he needs to hand off some of it to someone like Chayka to actually make the moves so long as he approves them. It's about finding the best fits for the team now and five, ten years down the road.
Hopefully Sundin finds. quiet neighbourhood because any move Toronto makes is going to have his stamp of approval all over it for better or worse.
