Although there was a lot of hype around the Maple Leafs' Hometown Remix jerseys, they are going to be used a lot less often than fans had anticipated.
The NHL decided to give fans a bit of nostalgia mixed with culture this season as they announced Hometown Remix jerseys for all 32 teams. Some use retro logos, others are stylized to show off certain aspects of their city - either way they look fantastic.
The Maple Leafs' jersey is an homage to their 1927 jerseys from when Conn Smythe took over the team. A simple blue maple leaf with Toronto emblazoned below, there was a sense of simplicity and harkened back to a time when the team was successful.
But originally, fans were expecting to see a fair bit of the new threads this season as there was expected to be nine games this season where the team wears the jerseys however that's been rectified- and not for the better.
Maple Leafs retro jerseys won't be on full display past November
Unfortunately for fans, the team is scheduled to only wear those jerseys five times in 2026-27, though each night comes with its own specific theme:
-
Their first game against New Jersey will be the kickoff for the Hometown Remix nights as well as a celebration of the Hockey Hall of Fame, with those inductions happening later that week.
The 80s will be on display against Los Angeles, and you can expect to see some stars and alumni from the past make some appearances that night. Philly gets even more old-school as they face off against Toronto on 70s night.
Apropos to history, the 90s night falls to the Tampa Bay Lightning - a team who came into the NHL in 1993. Finally, the team celebrates '100 Years of the Leaf' against the reigning Stanley Cup Champions, the Carolina Hurricanes.
The NHL has an alternate jersey problem
Back in the 2000s and early 2010s, you couldn't find a team who didn't have at least one alternate jersey they would sport on a regular basis.
Toronto had a third jersey that paid homage to the 70s teams, and teams like the Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks all had stylish alternatives to the regular home and away colours.
But those seem to now be reserved for these specific nights or in the case of Toronto's previous moniker as the St. Pats - only at one specific time of the year.
The NHL is seemingly trying to bring back that feeling of the 2000s where teams were given a chance to have a bit of fun with their alternate jerseys and it became a pretty profitable venture as fans wanted the 'new and cool' designs of the era.
It's just a shame that the Maple Leafs and their fans will only get a month to wear them before they get tossed on the shelf to collect dust.
Are you disappointed there are only five games where Toronto will use their Hometown Remix jersey?
