The Toronto Maple Leafs' trade involving Matias Maccelli is officially completed, as Utah gets the original pick traded after the forward didn't hit his milestones.
Last season was a disaster for the Maple Leafs, let's be honest. They couldn't score, they couldn't defend, they dealt with a slew of injuries, and the general feel around the room was misery. One player who was brought in as a way to give Auston Matthews some help was Matias Maccelli, but he never really got acclimated.
He got better as the season went on, but never earned a real shot to prove himself and he was often relegated to the third line. After Toronto refused to offer him a deal, he signed with the Islanders and is doing much better over in Long Island.
Maccelli's failed season in Toronto was a blessing in disguise
But with Maccelli's rough season, it came with a bit of a relief for the Maple Leafs as they didn't have to give up more than they had to.
Due to Macelli not hitting his conditions attached to the pick sent to Utah, the Mammoth are going to get a 2027 third-round pick as opposed to something much more valuable:
Original conditions:
* Toronto qualifies for the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs.
* Matias Maccelli records at least 51 points during the 2025-26 season.
* If both conditions are met, Utah receives Toronto's 2029 second-round pick instead.
Well, Toronto didn't qualify for the playoffs for 2025-26 so there's the first one stricken off the list. Maccelli also only had 39 points for the Maple Leafs, so strike two. Therefore, since both conditions weren't met (and it not being close) Utah just gets the 2027 third-rounder sent in the deal.
Toronto gets lucky yet again after their dismal 2025-26 season
Chalk it up to the hockey gods feeling sympathy yet again for the Maple Leafs as the team managed to save a pretty valuable asset that could be dealt in a future deal. Add in the fact they lucked out on Gavin McKenna, and things are a bit in Toronto's favour.
You can't blame Maccelli for not hitting his milestones as the Maple Leafs themselves were never a contender at any point last year, and he was never given a shot to hit those marks. Could he have? Sure, he's proven he can in prior seasons.
But being a product of a bad system with a coach who didn't really believe in his style of play, and on a bad team that had no hopes of making it out of the Atlantic, it felt all but inevitable that Maccelli wouldn't fulfill those conditions.
Now, we're absolutely sure.
Do you think Matias Maccelli was a bad signing for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
