Maple Leafs' struggles may force Brad Treliving and Craig Berube into an uncomfortable bench move

With Toronto failing to figure out their power play, it may be time for management to make a crucial decision on assistant coach Marc Savard.
If there has been anything that can be considered bad about the Toronto Maple Leafs this season it's been their power play. Currently sitting 31st in the NHL with a measly 14.1% success rate; the team just can't capitalize.
Granted, they don't get as many opportunities as other teams but that's no excuse. They have failed to score even though they've overloaded their top unit and time is running out for them to get it together.
Fans plead for Toronto to fire Marc Savard to fix ailing power play
However when the question was posed to social media, one fan had a pretty immediate solution that's hard to ignore.
Savard has not been effective as their power play coach this season, and while he has been successful in years past, is unable to adapt to what he's been given this year and hasn't gotten anything out of his pieces.
Granted, it's up to the players to figure it out on the ice but if Savard can't orchestrate a good enough strategy then how can they be expected to succeed? It's the same old, same old for the Maple Leafs and it doesn't work.
The Maple Leafs went from 9th in the NHL in 2024-25 with a 24.8% success rate (nearly 1 in 4) to now 10 percentage points lower in 2025-26.
It's strange why Toronto decided to hire him for their power play considering he led Calgary to a 17.9% rate in 2023-24; good for 26th in the NHL, and obviously he hasn't had the best success overall.
So why haven't they tried something different?
If you aren't changing the players, change the coach
The team has tried Auston Matthews on the point, on the flank; everything. Why not move him down and see if a guy like Scott Laughton can give you the spark? He's going to fight for pucks and grind in the offensive zone long enough to make something happen.
He was brought in last year and got very lucky with Mitch Marner being in town, and it's clear that Savard can't figure out something without him. He's clearly out of any options and going back to what hasn't worked isn't a solution either.
We also have no clue who the team would even bring in to replace him. Do they look to an experienced head coach like Peter Laviolette? What about a former player like Mark Giordano? Heck, bring in Bruce Boudreau to sort things out, and you have a new head coach if you let Craig Berube walk too.
This isn't a quick fix, and it's going to take time for Toronto to acclimate to a new face if they decide to bring one in.
But there's also a very good chance that whoever comes in, no matter how good they are, can wrangle this group together and have them work as a cohesive unit.
If that happens, then it's going to be a lot more than Savard being shown the door.
