The Toronto Maple Leafs may be at the risk of losing draft prospect Joe Miller if they don't sign him before his rights expire on August 15.

As Toronto continues to make a flurry of offseason moves, they are closer and closer to getting the lineup they envisioned once John Chayka and company took over. A tougher and more defensively sound bottom-six, a star goaltender, and one of the most exciting prospects of all time has led the team to feel completely different and lends hope to fans that this year is different.

But the team is also running out of room to make deals, and due to that they could end up losing out on one of their prospects.

Joe Miller is staring at free agency if the Maple Leafs leave him unsigned

Miller, 23, was drafted 180th overall by the Maple Leafs in 2020 and has spent the last four seasons in the NCAA at Harvard University where he had a pretty solid college career with 90 points in 128 games along with a plus-21 and only 28 PIM.

But he still remains unsigned by the team six years later, and due to restrictions and rules the team will lose the chance to sign him once the August 15th deadline expires - which is the last date NCAA players who were drafted can sign an ELC.

Instead of the CHL where it's only a two-year window, the college route allows players to have a bit more seasoning and allow their respective teams to wait it out until after their senior year to make a decision giving both the college player leverage in their future, and their team some time to come to a conclusion.

Toronto already let two draft rights expire this year in Nathan Mayes and Matthew Hlacar, but due to them being in the CHL and not committing to the NCAA, they were actually able to re-enter the 2026 NHL Draft this past June.

Toronto needs to decide if Miller has a place in the pipeline

While Miller has shown to be a pretty solid pivot for Harvard, the Maple Leafs may not have a ton of room for him. Already employing a hefty list of centres spread throughout the organization it'll be hard seeing him make the Maple Leafs.

He could get an AHL deal although with only three spots left for a contract and potential waiver/PTO deals to consider, signing Miller would eat into both cap and contract space, and is already log jammed with Jacob Quillan, Luke Haymes, Logan Shaw, Tinus Luc Koblar, Tyler Hopkins, and Zac Olsen up the middle.

One alternative that the team could pursue would be sending him to Cincinnati of the ECHL where he could get some professional experience while still being in the organization but again - it's just a contract for the sake of a contract.

There isn't a lot of room for Miller despite having a solid college career, and the Maple Leafs are likely going to see him pass through without even a turn of the head. His career in Toronto may be coming to an end, but with his talents he'll find work - just not here.
