Toronto Maple Leafs reporter Jonas Siegel recently did an interview with William Nylander, and his interpretation of a specific quote has fans upset.
William Nylander has been one of the best players on the Maple Leafs for years at this point, and remains one of the original members of the Core Four.
However, Leafs fans got quite the scare earlier today when Jonas Siegel of The Athletic put out an interview with Nylander and suggested that the forward did not want to waste his best years with the Leafs.
One on one: William Nylander doesn't want to waste his “best years” with the Maple Leafs:
-
This immediately led to panic on social media, as fans thought this meant that Nylander wanted to stop playing for the Maple Leafs altogether.
However, the entire sentence was misleading. If you read the actual excerpt from the interview, you immediately realize that Nylander's thinks his "best years" are still to come.
Siegel: I don't know if you feel this way. But I feel like your best year, you still haven't had it yet. Do you feel that way?
Nylander: Of course. I agree. I think that there's still a little bit more to get to. I want to be a dominant player for the rest of my contract, and even past that. So I think that my best years are coming.
As far as time wasted is concerned, Nylander simply wants to maximize these best years into real results on the ice, such as deep playoff runs and maybe even a Stanley Cup.
The Toronto media continue to get a bad wrap
It is the little things like this that compound over time and give the Toronto media a bad rap. Players have oftentimes complained about the pressure in the city, and this will not help whatsoever.
That said, Nylander mostly stays off social media, so we're not sure he is even going to see how Siegel spun his words here.
Tonight, Nylander will be focused on taking on the Las Vegas Golden Knights in the desert.
Do you believe William Nylander is going to retire with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
