According to NHL Insider David Pagnotta, the Toronto Maple Leafs are gunning for Mason Marchment, as the forward could definitely help ease Mitch Marner's departure.
With the NHL offseason set to kick off in full swing
once free agency opens up on July 1, there are teams who are needing to make sure they have enough cap space to be able to make the necessary moves in order to shore up any holes or bring in new faces.
The Dallas Stars are one of those teams, and with
Matt Duchene re-signing, they are very thin on cap. Expected to make a move, one name who has consistently popped up is Mason Marchment; with the Maple Leafs expected to pursue him.
Toronto expected to heavily pursue Mason Marchment this summer: Pagnotta
That's what NHL Insider David Pagnotta believes, and besides the Maple Leafs, he also names another potential contender in the Marchment sweepstakes.
There is a lot of potential bringing in Marchment to Toronto, plus getting his $4.5-million cap off the books is going to help Dallas at least make a couple of moves, then they can figure out other contracts like Mathew Dumba and potentially
Jason Robertson.
Marchment, 30, would give Toronto a great option in their Top-9, and while he might not be the 100-point player that Mitch Marner is; very few are.
In 62 games this season he put up 47 points (22G, 25A) while also adding 21 blocks, 79 hits, 53 PIM and a plus-15 rating for the Stars.
The one time Maple Leaf has played in 302 games and has 189 points (76G, 113A) split between Toronto, Florida and Dallas. He was traded from Toronto to Florida in exchange for Denis Malgin; a deal that the Maple Leafs definitely regret.
How can Toronto acquire Mason Marchment and where does he fit?
Well, it wouldn't necessarily be the easiest deal, but there are two separate options that Toronto can utilize in order to bring him aboard.
Or, if Toronto decided to part with a player who doesn't necessarily fit their new style of play, perhaps a one-for-one involving Nick Robertson woulds suffice. He's an RFA, will be signing for extremely cheap, plus his brother plays for the team.
If they were to tell Jason that they can bring in his brother Nick and they can play together, knowing how close they are, it might make it easier for him to re-up, and Toronto benefits of
moving on from the polarizing Robertson.Toronto's main goal this offseason is to change their identity, and bringing in a player who will give them a lot more grit and consistent offense than Robertson certainly accomplishes that.
Unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, their pursuit of Marchment was short-lived, as the star forward was traded to the Seattle Kraken for a 2026 3rd-round and a 2025 4th-round pick.
It seems that Marchment gets a chance to help the Kraken instead, and will be a solid addition to the team who is looking for a bounce-back season.
