While it's a bit shocking considering that Joseph Woll has yet to return to action, the Toronto Maple Leafs decided to place Cayden Primeau on waivers.

As the 2pm deadline passes for NHL teams to place players on waivers, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a decision to cut ties with Cayden Primeau and placed the goaltender on the waiver wire Friday afternoon.
Primeau was claimed off waivers right before the team's season opener as they needed help for Anthony Stolarz and had just let James Reimer go from his PTO.
The team had wanted a goalie off the waiver wire but Primeau struggled in his short time with the team.

Why Toronto Waived Cayden Primeau Despite Joseph Woll's Absence

Although he went 2-1-0 he posted a 4.30 GAA and .838 SV%; very concerning numbers especially for a player who has been so lights out in the AHL even as late as last season.
If teams don't claim Primeau off waivers, the team will then be able to assign him to the Toronto Marlies, and given they just assigned Ken Appleby to their ECHL affiliate, he may be a third-stringer there.
Primeau was outstanding last season with the Laval Rocket, posting a 21-2-3 record with a blistering 1.96 GAA and .927 SV%, and has had exceptional numbers throughout his entire AHL career.
The NHL is a different beast however, and he has posted a 15-25-7 record with a 3.73 GAA and .882 SV%, and it's unknown as to why he can shut the door in the AHL but when it comes to a call-up he's rather pedestrian.
With the return of Woll imminent, Primeau's waiver assignment was a necessity and the fact that the team could call upon someone like Dennis Hildeby in case of emergency made him expendable.
While we wait and see where Cayden Primeau's next career path takes him, his time with the Maple Leafs has come to an end.
