Who Survived the First Wave and What It Signals for the Leafs' Roster Battle
A large majority of the names who were assigned to the Marlies didn't necessarily have a real shot at making the Maple Leafs this season outside of perhaps Jacob Quillan and maybe Luke Haymes but otherwise, this is who you're going to see line up for the AHL team come October.
Some new faces are going to be joining like Landon Sim, Haymes, Gunnarwolfe Fontaine, Borya Valis, and John Prokop meanwhile mainstays like Logan Shaw, and Ryan Tverberg are going to make sure the Marlies stay competitive.
But it means guys like Easton Cowan, Michael Pezzetta, Henry Thrun, Philippe Myers, and Dakota Mermis still get a chance to show what they can do with two preseason games left, and in the case of Cowan; make his NHL debut come October.
The majority of the team's lineup is set, with only a few pieces here and there where they need to fill some holes, but they have more than enough bodies.
Which necessitated the need for the team to assign an entire hockey team's worth of players back to the AHL, where they will look to take what they learned in camp and bring the Marlies success in 2025-26.
