The Toronto Maple Leafs made several roster moves on Friday including placing Auston Matthews on the IR.
With the team facing uncertainty, the Toronto Maple Leafs have made several moves to their roster according to the team's official PR account on X:
Maple Leafs G
Artur Akhtyamov has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies.
F Auston Matthews has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 11, 2025.
F
Easton Cowan has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL).
G
Joseph Woll has been activated to the roster.
The move being retroactive to Nov. 11 means that the Maple Leafs have Nov. 20 as an estimated time of return according to PuckPedia.
What Matthews' IR placement means for the Leafs' lineup
Matthews left Tuesday's game shortly after the collision with Bruins defenseman
Nikita Zadorov, though the team has not confirmed whether that play caused the injury:
With him being down, that means that Toronto has called up Easton Cowan as a roster replacement, though there is no clear indication where he will line up when he takes the ice.
Toronto used
John Tavares as the 1C against Los Angeles, and with ongoing lineup adjustments, it remains unclear how Toronto will structure the forward group in the coming games.
All in all, the team is out their captain and a player who was just finding his groove after a down season in 2024. In 17 games he's posted 14 points (9 goals, 5 assists) while also playing above-average defense and winning nearly 60% of his face-offs.
How the Leafs plan to manage their crease with Woll returning
What can't be overlooked in these roster changes is the fact that Toronto called up Joseph Woll from the American Hockey League as the team prepares for the possibility of his season debut.
It's not confirmed that Woll is going to start the team's next game against Chicago on Saturday Nov. 15, but at the very least it looks like he will be dressed.
Coming off of two AHL games, Woll managed a 0-1-1 record with a 3.72 GAA and .885 SV% while recording 46 out of 52 saves.
Woll has been away since the beginning of the season due to a leave of absence.
