The Toronto Maple Leafs are hoping Matias Maccelli can break out, however if he does they run the risk of giving the Utah Mammoth a much better draft outlook.

When the Toronto Maple Leafs brought Matias Maccelli aboard, it was a trade that seemed to surprise a ton of fans given he was a pretty under the radar acquisition but he has the backing of some pretty big names, so there's a lot to be excited for.

Why the Conditional Pick Could Haunt the Leafs

All it cost the Maple Leafs was a 2027 conditional 3rd-Round pick, and on the surface that seems to be a bargain to bring in a 24-year old with a ton of offensive potential, but there is a bit of a caveat to him breaking out in Toronto.
That condition attached to the pick is that if Maccelli were to score 51 or more points with the Maple Leafs (a big possibility) and the team makes the playoffs (almost a surety) it turns into a 2029 2nd-Round pick.
Sure, that's a few years from now but Toronto is giving Utah; a team that is essentially always going to be young, a chance for a premium pick.
This could be an issue for a couple of reasons. First, if Maccelli does end up breaking out, the team loses a great pick down the road and while there's no idea who the prospects are going into that draft year; it's always better to have more than less.
Plus, there's a chance that Maccelli is a bust and doesn't pick things up in Toronto and the team essentially wasted one of their earlier picks that could have been packaged for a more sure thing.
Maccelli is coming off a season where he only scored 18 points but had 106 points the two seasons prior (28 goals, 78 assists) so at least that's a positive sign.

Why It's a High-Risk, High-Reward Bet by Treliving

But for a team who was desperate to change things up, you can't get any more different than a guy no one has really heard of to come in and give him a shot at turning things around.
There's a very good chance his placement in the top-six with some elite players can unlock that potential and turn him into a proto-Mitch Marner of sorts, albeit with less defensive acumen.
That along gives Toronto a sigh of relief, but the fact they can keep him through his prime years and allow him to get some real chemistry going with the team; he could become deadly.
But then again he was given a lot more leeway in Arizona/Utah given he was part of a younger rebuilding squad, and he won't be given a lot of extra breathing room, especially with Craig Berube's tightly-run ship.
However, the team doesn't need to commit to him either. If they figure out that Maccelli doesn't fit they can dangle him as a trade piece at the deadline and bring in a suitable replacement.
There's a lot riding on Matias Maccelli's 2025-26 season, not only for his future, but his old team; who may benefit greatly from him finally breaking out in the NHL.
