Maple Leafs lose out as two waiver targets get claimed and find new homes
The Toronto Maple Leafs missed out on two key waiver pickups on Tuesday as both Vladislav Kolyachonok and Jonatan Berggren were both claimed by other teams.
On Monday it was announced that Laurent Brossoit, Jonatan Berggren and Vladislav Kolyachonok were all placed on waivers by their respective teams, and others had 24 hours to pick them up.
Brossoit would add legitimate goaltending stability, meanwhile both Kolyachonok and Berggren are young talents with loads of potential who just haven't found a solid spot in a lineup just yet.
The Maple Leafs certainly could have used all three of them, however it looks like they won't get the chance to see what they could have offered.
Berggren and Kolyachonok claimed as Maple Leafs miss out yet again
While Brossoit cleared waivers, both Kolyachonok and Berggren were claimed by the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues respectively.
Kolyachonok, 24, is a young two-way defender who has some very solid offensive traits, is a great passer, and in his minimal time in the NHL has shown some real growth.
He hasn't exploded offensively, but he has 17 points in 85 games while also adding 85 blocks and 74 hits in only 14:01 in his career. He's yet to really bust out and could be a huge part of the Bruins young D corps going forward.
Berggren, 25, is a former second-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings but has yet to come into his own. There was a lot of hype for him coming in, but has only put up 64 points in 169 games and a minus-31 rating.
Why Toronto needed to make at least one claim on Tuesday
Considering the team needs help in all three facets of the game: offense, defense, and goaltending, it's a surprise to see Toronto pass up on these players (especially Kolyachonok; who heads to their rivals).
Brossoit has shown genuine NHL-level talent and has great career numbers to back it up. Even in a temporary spot and knowing how inexperienced Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov are; plus the injury issues with Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz, he makes perfect sense.
Then we shift to Kolyachonok, who could have added so much more help offensively for Toronto's blueline, and a hefty improvement defensively over guys like Philippe Myers and Simon Benoit.
And at only 24 years old, he still has a lot of room to grow and could have even helped the Marlies; a team who needs help defensively too.
Berggren was the most 'wild-card' of the three, as he has a lot of NHL experience so far in his young career but it's hard to know where he would fit in Toronto; especially with Matias Maccelli still here. Why would Toronto want to bring another inconsistent foreward when they have so many?
But for a team who is seemingly ravaged by injuries week after week, adding some cheap bodies would have been a smart option, and ones who could actually improve your team at that.
The team will stand pat however, and hope whatever they put together going forward is enough to weather the storm ahead.
