The Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to bring in NCAA standout Tanner Adams in during development camp to see if he can find a spot in the team's future plans.
Withe the team looking to move on from
Mitch Marner this summer, all eyes focus on who is going to replace him, and
how the Leafs can manage going through a transition year after so many years of regular season success.
A lot of that involves thinking about the future, and bringing in potential prospects who could surprise everyone.
Brad Treliving signed a bevy of NCAA and junior players this season to restock his farm system to go along with several notable mainstays.
But according to reports, the Maple Leafs are set to invite another NCAA standout, at least to development camp, that being Providence's Tanner Adams.
Adams, a 5'11 winger out of Northport, NY, has ties to the Maple Leafs organization through teammate and fellow Leafs prospect Hudson Malinoski, with whom he has been teammates with the past two seasons.
Over those last two seasons,
Adams has 43 points in 72 games (17G, 26A) and while his offense has slightly regressed since he was a teenager, there's still a lot to be excited for.
Besides the potential offensive help, he seems like the perfect type of Craig Berube-esque player.
Defensively sound, Adams is known for getting into the dirtier aspects of the game, not afraid to fight for pucks, throw some hits, and take some punishment all for the sake of the team.
As Neutral Zone writes in their report on Adams in April 2025 regarding his outlook:
Adams' compete level, intelligence, and translatable habits give him a chance to grind his way into a bottom-six NHL role, but he'll need continued development and special teams versatility to earn a contract.
If passed over in the draft again, he's the type of college free agent a smart organization should track through his junior/senior year.
This was only a month ago, so they must have had some foresight knowing that he would be scooped up at some point.
While replacing Mitch Marner would be great, they already have guys like
Easton Cowan and
Borya Valis to add offense. They need solid two-way gritty play under Berube and Adams fits the bill.
Development camp will be a big indicator of who the next big things in the organization are, with the potential for Adams to come in and fill a much needed role, even if it's not the flashiest one.
