The Toronto Maple Leafs could find the defensive help they need by targeting Calgary Flames blue-liner Zach Whitecloud to shore up their back end.
Reports surfaced recently that the Maple Leafs were looking to improve their defensive game and the team was searching for a potential top-four defender to help balance things out and give Jim Hiller a bit more of an anchor at the back.
It would certainly benefit names like Morgan Rielly and Darren Raddysh as they need someone who can help cover for their defensive miscues when they do occur.
Zach Whitecloud needs out of Calgary, and Toronto needs him
But the question then becomes: What player does Toronto target? There are a few around the NHL who would be able to solidify the Maple Leafs' defense, but one name that sticks out is currently stuck out west and could use a change of scenery - Zach Whitecloud.
Whitecloud, 29, is a nine-year veteran who has been one of the more physical blue-liners in the league. Averaging nearly 72 hits and 73 blocks over his career, he's someone who may not stand out initially, but he does a great job at shutting things down.
For his career he has 88 points in 402 games, and despite his physical and aggressive nature only has 188 PIM. Maple Leafs fans will know Whitecloud very well as he was the one who llaid in a questionable hit to Matthew Knies in the 2024-25 season that caused some debate around the NHL.
But currently only making $2.75M and stuck on a middling and pretty bad Calgary team, Whitecloud may want to have a playoff future, and sticking with the Flames won't really accomplish that - at least this season.
Where would Whitecloud even fit on the Maple Leafs?
The great part about Whitecloud is that he can play anywhere on the blue line. If Toronto wanted to keep the McCabe - Tanev pairing together, then Whitecloud and Rielly can play together (likely the third pair) and Raddysh can play alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
While it removes Troy Stecher from the lineup, the team becomes a bit right-handed heavy with Whitecloud so they'd need to balance it out.
However, the team can also split up their second pairing and still honour a shutdown group while spreading the wealth:
McCabe - Raddysh
Rielly - Tanev
Ekman-Larsson - Whitecloud
It's not your traditional shutdown pair but Whitecloud and OEL are very good defenders. Ekman-Larsson is an elite stick-checker and is still an aggressive and steady defender even as he ages. Whitecloud offers some size and protection for him as well, and he's more of a shutdown guy than Stecher - and OEL can still be your transition quarterback.
While it's unknown what the cost would be to acquire Whitecloud, there's no doubt that he would be able to help balance things out for the Maple Leafs blue-line, and he could be the answer that turns their defense from a question mark to an exclamation point.
Do you think Zach Whitecloud is the right fit for the Maple Leafs?
