According to reports, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltending prospect Vyacheslav Peksa could be headed back to Russia after three years with the organization.
Vyacheslav Peksa has been part of the Maple Leafs organization since 2023 though was drafted in 2021 (185th overall). He spent two seasons in Russia prior to moving over to North America where he spent most of his time with the ECHL with Newfoundland and Cincinnati.
But he hasn't really been factored into the future conversation especially since the team already has Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov as the young guns in net, not to mention Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz heading things in the NHL.
Peksa, 23, actually spent a decent chunk of time with the Marlies this season going 4-4-0 with a 3.78 GAA and .869 SV% but was extremely good for Cincinnati in 2024-25 going 12-14-3 with a 2.68 GAA and .904 SV%.
Peksa may not be a fit with the Maple Leafs, so he is thinking about heading back home
With that he may feel like he's not going to get his shot, and according to reports out of Russia he may be entertaining a return back home.
Hockey Hub News on X reported that Peksa may be returning to the KHL next season though there have been no details as to a specific team or deal being struck:

Toronto's goalie pipeline is too strong for Vyacheslav Peksa
Peksa hasn't yet gotten a shot at the NHL level and with the pipeline firmly set for years to come, he may be stuck in the ECHL or AHL for the foreseeable future. At only 23, he wants to prove he can be a starting goalie elsewhere and Russia makes sense as they have the second-largest pro hockey league in the world.
You can't really fault him because sometimes the transition isn't easy, but Toronto already has their Russian phenom goaltender in Akhtyamov. He's being looked at as someone who could be a future starter for the Maple Leafs and his performance in the AHL Playoffs has been fantastic.
Toronto also has a lot of commitment to their goalies with all of them being signed to extensions, so Peksa isn't necessarily bad but more so a player who just doesn't have the room to make the jump.
The only respite he could get is that the team ends up trading a goaltender this summer and open up a space at the AHL level for Peksa to be able to show what he's got; though his small sample size leaves a lot to be desired.
Do you believe Vyacheslav Peksa is going to leave the Maple Leafs?
