The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially fired coach Craig Berube. General manager John Chayka announced the decision today, marking his first major move since being hired last week.
The move finally brings an end to the Berube saga that only lasted two seasons in Toronto. After a strong debut season that saw him win the Atlantic Division, the team took a huge step back and finished last in the division, leading to Brad Treliving's firing and a deadline dump of some serious talent.
Chayka spoke about Berube and the decision to let him go as well:
Craig is a tremendous coach and an even better person. This decision is a reflection of an organizational shift and an opportunity for a fresh start than it is an evaluation of Craig.
We are grateful for his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the Maple Leafs organization and we wish Craig and his family nothing but the best moving forward.

While it sounds like Chayka genuinely respects Berube, it feels like going in a different direction was the only way he could, considering how much fan backlash and feedback there has been over the past 24 hours with the #BerubeOUT movement trending on X.
Considering he was a Brad Treliving hire it's pretty clear the team wants to get rid of any inkling of that previous regime and Chayka's mention of a fresh start all but assures that's the main focus for Berube's firing.
It now marks the second executive to leave in a week as Shane Doan also parted ways with the team as he continues to search for a different position.
The most important coaching search is Maple Leafs history is about to begin for John Chayka
Auston Matthews recently just gave the team a deadline of sorts to see how the team is going to look by the summer. Well, if he was looking for action then he certainly got it on Wednesday.
Though there is no meeting scheduled yet between him and Chayka, he has to feel confident knowing the GM will pull the trigger when necessary.
But then the direction shifts now to who can fully maximize the Maple Leafs lineup.
The Oilers were reportedly talking to Bruce Cassidy although Vegas tried hard to not let that happen, meanwhile there are still coaches like Patrick Roy, Peter Laviolette, and Jay Woodcroft who all could be looking for a head coaching job in 2026-27.
Though realistically, Toronto needs a fresh and modern mind to go with their new data-driven system and that's where they should focus on trying to lure Misha Donskov away from the Dallas Stars.
He's a coach who uses the hard numbers to drive plays on the fly, and his ability to translate the mathematical side into a player friendly and accessibly way has revered him as one of the best assistants in the game.
Toronto needs someone who is willing to take some risks and try some new things, and with Donskov at the helm he is more than willing to mix thing up if he thinks it'll benefit the team overall, and he should be able to find a way to utilize Matthews to his fullest extent once again.
Maple Leafs fans, your voice has been heard and Craig Berube has been fired.
The way part for John Chayka is now over, and the real work is set to begin.
