Maple Leafs finally have the chance to add Suzuki through waivers

One way the Maple Leafs can make their Montreal rivalry even more intense by adding the brother of Nick Suzuki after the Ottawa placed his brother Ryan on waivers.

With 5 PM Monday being the deadline for teams to get their rosters in order, that means a flurry of roster movement has taken place. There have been dozens upon dozens of waiver assignments over the past few days, with the Maple Leafs not immune to the sweeping winds of change.

But with Sunday's wire comes an interesting addition that could turn the Maple Leafs' rivalry with the Montreal Canadiens on its head, and it has nothing to do with stealing one of their players.

Toronto can acquire a Suzuki this season (no, not that one)

Instead, it involves acquiring Nick Suzuki's brother Ryan to give their heated affairs even more fireworks.

Ryan Suzuki was placed on waivers by the Ottawa Senators as they trim the fat of their roster, and while he would be a solid bottom-six addition to the Sens, it's clear they have no room for him just yet.

Suzuki, 25, has been fantastic over the past two seasons for the Chicago Wolves, scoring 107 points in 135 games. He's also familiar with the Maple Leafs given that he faced off against several prospects and members of the roster in the Calder Cup Final. He's a high-level playmaker who uses his shiftiness to create separation, and he can finish.

Sure he wouldn't be more than bottom-six depth but if the Maple Leafs are concerned about the level of scoring in the group then Suzuki would absolutely be a benefit. He also wouldn't cost much given he makes only $850,000 and isn't signed to a long-term commitment.

Adding Ryan Suzuki would make Montreal hate Toronto even more

If there was any way to intensify the Maple Leafs/Canadiens rivalry it's by adding the Habs' top players' brother just to make things a bit more interesting. We know how close the two are, and if the Maple Leafs are giving Ryan the chance to shine, he may want to try and outdo his brother.

They would rarely face off against each other given that Nick is an elite top-line forward whereas Ryan is more of a depth player, but there's still motivation. Brotherly competition could be the catalyst for giving Suzuki his first real shot in the NHL too with the two teams facing off four times this year.

Beyond the rivalry between the two teams and the brothers, there is still a talented forward waiting for his chance to shine. Toronto should look to make a claim on Suzuki, and with questions about their bottom-six's injury status - insurance is always a positive.

But with the Maple Leafs already above the cap and pretty much locked up for the season, adding Suzuki is nowhere near a guarantee but it would guarantee a new layer in the forever rivalry between Toronto and Montreal.
