The Toronto Maple Leafs didn't expect much from Troy Stecher when they claimed him off waivers, but his play as of late might have them thinking about an extension.

Troy Stecher is a veteran who often went under appreciated whether that be due to a lack of a flashy game, or the fact that some may see him as undersized for a defenseman.
However he plays with a heart bigger than most, and while his size may give him pause, he doesn't mind putting his body on the line for the sake of the team. He's given Toronto new life and a great asset on the blueline.

Leafs fan want Troy Stecher to stick around

It's very surprising considering he was just a free waiver claim, but he not only stepped in but stepped up. He's a free agent at the end of the season, and there are discussions around social media about Stecher's future and they believe he should be locked up for a long time:
While it wouldn't be a huge deal, extending Stecher would be a smart move from the Maple Leafs because they know they are getting a reliable and trusted veteran who will give them minutes, offensive help and solid defensive metrics.
Stecher, 31, has appeared in 24 games for the Maple Leafs and Oilers this year and has six points (1 goal, 5 assists). He has been outstanding though in Toronto with a plus-nine rating, 18 blocks, and playing over 20 minutes a night.
Knowing that Toronto's defensive group is prone to injuries and they are signed long-term, keeping Stecher around as an asset wouldn't hurt the team nor would it wreck their finances. If he re-signs on a three-year deal worth $1.5-million then that's perfectly suitable for a third pairing regular.
With the Maple Leafs not having a ton of free agents coming up, they could easily find a spot for Stecher and keep him around. He'e become a fan favorite, the team loves him and it seems he's found his home in Toronto.
