If Toronto wants to improve their blue line, get younger, and more mobile then a trade with Chicago to acquire Kevin Korchinski should be a no-brainer.
There have been reports recently that the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in acquiring some defensive help, with Calgary's Zach Whitecloud being a name floated around frequently. With Chris Tanev's future in doubt, there's a world where trading for him makes a lot of sense.
But the team also needs to get younger in general, and will need an eventual replacement for Oliver Ekman-Larsson not only in the future - but as soon as this season. Toronto is also right-handed heavy on the back end, and could use a lefty to replace OEL as opposed to running someone on their off side.
Chicago holds the perfect piece for the Maple Leafs to get younger and faster
Wth that being said, the Maple Leafs have the perfect opportunity to not only add more youth to their blue line but they can also add a lot more mobility and offensive potential thanks to a new report from Elliotte Friedman:
Chicago's got a bunch of D, and I think a guy we're gonna be watching this year is Kevin Korchinski; Korchinski I've heard, they had some discussions with other teams around in the offseason.
Korchinski, 22, is a player who hasn't gotten a lot of playing time in Chicago over the past two seasons. He only has 29 games played from 2024-26 and has only appeared in one game for the Blackhawks this season.
He was very good in the AHL and managed to put up some solid offensive seasons, and his last two seasons in the WHL had him score a combined 138 points in 121 games - as a defenseman. Chicago saw that potential and drafted him 7th overall in 2022, he just hasn't made the leap.
Toronto can swoop in and steal Korchinski with a solid trade package
If the Maple Leafs were really hoping to get younger and more mobile, then adding Korchinski makes perfect sense. They were already hoping that Emil Andrae would be that piece but he was added to the Knies-Marchenko trade for salary purposes and the team lacks his skillset.
Toronto can offer the Blackhawks a package that includes Colorado's 2028 first-round pick as well as defenseman Noah Chadwick.
The former helps the Blackhawks find a young player within the next two seasons (or give them an asset in another trade) and the latter gives them a player very similar to Korchinski who is ready to make the leap.
If Chicago still wants an NHL-ready player then the Maple Leafs can tack on Miles Wood, a speedy and scrappy winger who would do well in a variety of roles for the Blackhawks. Basically, if Korchinski isn't being used - find a way to bring him in.
The deal gives Chicago draft capital, a young prospect, and a player who can help now that doesn't cost much and fits within their style. Toronto in turn gets younger on the back end, finds a future replacement for Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and gives him a chance to be competitive right away.
Should the Maple Leafs make a trade with the Blackhawks to acquire Kevin Korchinski?
