The Toronto Maple Leafs may be ready to move Mitch Marner, and now one Montreal journalist has proposed an intriguing trade that sends him to the Montreal Canadiens.
This summer promises many changes for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and while
Morgan Rielly and
John Tavares could potentially be moved, Mitch Marner's time in Toronto appears to be officially ending.
There's already been many mock trades to send him to Chicago, Utah, Seattle and other intriguing destinations, but now, it appears the rival Montreal Canadiens have entered the race.
Montreal reporter proposes Mitch Marner trade to the Canadiens
According to Montreal reporter Mathis Therrien, there's a blockbuster trade there to be made, proposing that the Canadiens send the No. 5 overall pick to Toronto in exchange for Marner.
«However, there is another type of trade that could be made with the 5th overall pick (of the Montreal Canadiens), which is to trade it for an established star player.
Mathias Brunet also raised a bold idea during the recent episode of his podcast "Processus" with Simon Boisvert, suggesting trading this pick for Mitch Marner.» - Mathis Therrien
On paper, it's an intriguing move, especially for Toronto, who could target an elite defenseman of the future, or potentially a long-term replacement for Marner. On the other hand, it's unclear whether or not the move makes sense for Montreal, who could be another year or two away from competing for the playoffs, and on top of that, it's uncertain whether or not Marner would waive his NMC for a major rival.
If the Maple Leafs can get Mitch Marner to waive his NMC, the trade market for the star winger will heat up, but for now, it's unlikely he would head to a fierce rival.
