Lindy Ruff's request for Toronto fans to stay home is a blatant humiliation of the Maple Leafs

Lindy Ruff told Maple Leafs fans to sell their tickets back to Sabres fans, and with the way things are looking in the Atlantic Division - you can hardly blame him.
Ruff spoke to the media ahead of Toronto's game vs. Buffalo and had some choice words for the Maple Leafs and their fans. When asked about the atmosphere knowing the difference in the standings, Ruff mocked the situation:
I was hoping Toronto fans would sell their tickets back to Buffalo fans
While said in jest, Ruff's certainly feeling like this game is easily winnable and felt like the Buffalo fans deserved a chance to watch a 'real' hockey team.
It's led to an air of confidence that shows the tables have turned in what could be affectionately called 'Scotiabank South'.
The death of 'Scotiabank South' proves the Sabres have reclaimed their barn
For years, if you were to go to KeyBank Center (formerly HSBC Arena) you would see a majority of fans clad in blue and white as Toronto fans made the quick highway jaunt down to Buffalo to cheer on the Maple Leafs.
It led to a weird atmosphere where the home team was vastly outnumbered by the opposing fans, but at a time when Buffalo was really bad - no one wanted to watch anyways.
Now fast forward to 2026 where no Maple Leafs fan wants to be caught dead watching at home let alone pay the money to watch in the stands (though granted, it's significantly cheaper).
For what it's worth, as bad as Buffalo has been you can't fault the fans. They still showed up, there was loyalty. But the Sabres have actually rewarded their fans after increasing prices - the inflation reflects the results.
Toronto meanwhile will still charge you over $1,000 for a family of four to enjoy less than mediocre hockey, and now with the most marketable player out for the season there's really no reason to show up anymore; streaming is a fraction of the price.
Lindy Ruff is weaponizing the Atlantic Division standings to embarrass Toronto
It's a kick in the teeth from Ruff who has no doubt been on the receiving end after so many last-place finishes and felt a little vengeance was apropos. For all the yelling Leafs fans did asking Sabres fans 'Why are you here?', they can now ask them the same thing.
This is brand new territory for both Toronto and Buffalo, and Ruff knows that this is a much more fractured team than in years past, and with the Sabres historically doing well against the Maple Leafs; it could be a long night for Craig Berube's squad.
However, this has to be a wakeup call for Toronto. Top teams don't let the opposition run them out of the building, and until they pull things together the decrease in fan support is only going to continue.
It's no longer a cheap and fun way to watch the Maple Leafs, not only because Buffalo's increased prices make it a little harder, but Toronto is flat out not fun to watch anywhere.
The Sabres are no longer the laughing stock of the NHL. That's now reserved for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Lindy Ruff is laughing loudest right now.
Ruff's comments show Buffalo is nobody's punching bag anymore
Always someone who is a bit rough around the edges, Ruff's comments are a telling sign that Buffalo is no longer going to sit around and take mockery and it's their time to throw shade.
For years everyone laughed at the Sabres' misfortunes but in hindsight 99% of that was Kevyn Adams' fault. They fired him, hired a real GM in Jarmo Kekkelainen and look what happened?
Before Adams was fired? 14-14-4. Since then? 26-6-2. Buffalo has nearly as many wins since Dec. 15 than the Maple Leafs do the entire season.
This is a team that knows who they are, and if they can re-sign Alex Tuch long-term then their outlook is going to be very bright for years to come.
By calling out Maple Leafs fans, Ruff's message is simple - stay at home because we know your team is going to anyways.
