This Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, Nikita Grebyonkin, just got one step closer to officially joining the NHL and the Toronto Maple Leafs after his KHL contract was terminated today.

While the Toronto Maple Leafs likely have all eyes on the game tonight against the Boston Bruins, other news has broken that could impact future roster decisions. It was announced today that prospect Nikita Grebyonkin has had his contract terminated by his KHL club, making him eligible to sign an entry-level contract with the Leafs.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk have terminated a contract with 20 y.o. forward Nikita Grebyonkin on mutual agreement.

Grebyonkin's season with Metallurg was already finished, so the only real need to terminate his contract at this point was so that he could sign an entry-level deal that could make him eligible for play this playoffs. While that is entirely unlikely, having the option is surely something the Leafs will consider.

Grebyonkin had a fairly successful season with Metallurg, scoring 19 goals and 22 assists in his campaign. It is highly likely that he joins the North American system next season.
