The Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has reportedly not started to talk about a contract extension with general manager Brad Treliving yet.

In a recent paper for The Athletic, the insider Pierre LeBrun revealed that John Tavares and the Maple Leafs haven't started to discuss about his future with the team.

The captain will become a free agent after the next season, the last of his seven year, $11,000,000 AAV contract. He's not eligible to sign a contract extension until July 1st, as he enters the final year of his deal.

However, LeBrun shared another interesting update about Tavares. He stated that the forward won't waive his no-movement clause to join another team. This means that he'll likely accept a lower salary to stay in Toronto.

Here's what LeBrun wrote:

"There's been no conversation between them and John Tavares' camp, led by agent Pat Brisson. But either way, should the Leafs ever ask, Tavares a 2025 UFA with a full no-move clause doesn't want to waive to go anywhere."

It's too early to start worrying about Tavares' future in Toronto at this point. It wouldn't be surprising to see him reach a deal during the next season, or even in the 2025 summer.
