John Tortorella led the Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final and while he's not the type of coach you'd expect Toronto to hire, he could be a difference maker.

'Torts' often gets a lot of criticism for how he handles not only his players but also the media. However if you were to talk to some players they have the utmost respect for him. He's been able to guide the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup Final and found a pretty solid connection with of all people, Mitch Marner.

He's also a coach who knows how to win, has a vast wealth of experience and commands respect. Though he does bring back some past memories of coaches long past like Randy Carlyle and Craig Berube, you can't argue he's successful.

Toronto's playoff failures means that Tortorella isn't really a bad idea in theory

He also has not committed to Vegas beyond this season and admitted that after the Cup is over, he's done with the team for the time being. That means he is a free agent, and if he's able to win a Cup with them and still find himself looking for work, then many teams are going to come calling.

One of those teams has to be the Toronto Maple Leafs and while it seems a little crazy to do considering the names who were linked and may be in the mix as head coach - there's a little method to the madness.

Tortorella is someone who doesn't take failure as an excuse, and the Maple Leafs are a team who have failed consistently in the postseason for the last 20+ years. He pulled Vegas into a playoff spot and guided them to a Cup Final so clearly he knows how to bring a group together.

Toronto's best shot at the Cup was last year when they were about to put the Panthers in a stranglehold, but instead imploded and found themselves on the outs while Florida won a second straight Cup.

Other than that, it's been pretty rough and it feels like no matter the coach; they just can only bring them together for so long.

What a Tortorella bench would demand from the top stars

Which is why Tortorella could be so important. He demands the best from his stars and he won't be one to let a guy like William Nylander off the hook if he's not holding up his end of the deal. Toronto needs a good coach yes, but they also need one who doesn't pass the buck and takes accountability.

Tortorella tells it as it is and isn't shy about saying who wasn't pulling their weight or not. He's also someone who stands up for his players, and wouldn't be like a Berube-type who lets them fend for themselves.

Sure he's a fiery coach but he also tends to give his players a little bit of leeway so he's not going to come down on them every single time.

When Travis Konecny gave the puck away in 2025, he called Konecny a 'wingnut' but prefaced it with it being his aggressive nature being a positive, not a negative:

My best player. That's what you have to live with TK. He's a bit of a wingnut when it comes to... (long pause) ...I think the best thing that we did with him was allow him to play, 'cause I think he's such a reactive player.

You gotta live with some of those things. If you overcoach him and you give him too much direction... I don't think it's good, and you gotta allow him to play.

That sounds like the kind of coach that players like Nylander and Auston Matthews will thrive under. He lets them do their thing and allows them to make mistakes, but he won't take consistent failure or mistakes that are egregious.

There's a difference between trying to win the game in overtime and losing the puck and just putting a lazy pass out there with no hustle on the way back. Tortorella is perfectly okay with the former, but it's the latter that will get blasted.

Which is what you need from a coach, and though he may rub some people the wrong way, his success has been well-documented and there's a reason Vegas targeted him to replace Bruce Cassidy.

John Tortorella may not be the popular choice, or one that Maple Leafs fans will gravitate to immediately, but he could be the antidote to Toronto's poisonous playoff record.
