The Toronto Maple Leafs made a shock move on Monday, announcing that John Tavares is stepping aside as captain, and now we officially know their plans.
Unfortunately, the team just can't ignore the lack of success under his captaincy, and with his pending free agency in the summer of 2025, it was time to make the move.
Now, TSN's Gord Miller has given a massive update on the situation, revealing that rather than stripping Tavares of the captaincy, he was approached and simply stepped aside, making way for a new name to take the role.
Following on from that, Darren Dreger has given an update on exactly who the next captain will be, suggesting that Auston Matthews, the face of the franchise will officially don the 'C' moving forward, with an announcement expected on Wednesday.
While John Tavares played his role well, Leafs fans haven't exactly been kind to him with the lack of team success, and even with one year left on his deal, there's not expected to be much friction between the two stars.
No. 91 remains a fantastic player down the middle of the Maple Leafs lineup, and perhaps this change is exactly what this team needs, so if Tavares remains confident in his place with the Maple Leafs, this could be one of the moves that leads them to plenty of success moving forward.
