Now, insiders like Frank Seravalli are revealing some of the finer details of the move. For instance, Seravalli revealed that the Leafs tried to trade Matthew Knies at the draft. In fact, they reportedly offered him to the San Jose Sharks.
The goal was to receive the second overall pick in return. However, a deal never materialized, and the Leafs kept Knies until earlier today.

Now, Knies finds himself playing for a listless Columbus Blue Jackets franchise, and we cannot imagine he is particularly happy about it.
Just over one year after signing a six-year deal with the Maple Leafs, Knies is now the odd man out and has to play for a team that probably won't even make the postseason.
The business of hockey can be brutal, and Knies is learning that today as general manager John Chayka chose Kirill Marchenko over him.
For Maple Leafs fans, this is a lot to take in. No one expected this to happen, and with Knies being a beloved figure, all of this hits a whole lot harder.
However, Marchenko is a hell of a player, and he has a chance to be part of this next generation of Leafs hockey.
