Mitch Marner is set to hit free agency in just over two weeks, and an insider has leaked a record-breaking contract offer he is set to receive from an Eastern Conference rival: the Carolina Hurricanes.
Since the Toronto Maple Leafs were
eliminated in round two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a lot of discussion has been around the future of superstar forward Mitch Marner.
Set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st, Marner has garnered much attention around the league.
Carolina Hurricanes preparing to storm Mitch Marner sweepstakes
Moments ago, NHL insider David Pagnotta shared that the Leafs' rival, the Carolina Hurricanes, are set to offer Marner a record-shattering deal north of $14 million for the next seven years.
When/if Mitch Marner hits the open market July 1, the expectation is the Carolina Hurricanes are going to take a massive swing to try and sign him.
Sources say we shouldn't be surprised if they go above $14M on an AAV over a 7-year term. UFA market opens in 18 days. - David Pagnotta
This deal above $14 million would make Marner the highest-paid player in the NHL because the current record per year is
Leon Draisaitl's $14 million per year deal with the Oilers.
Mitch Marner choosing Carolina would make Leafs fans furious
Now, just a few months later, it looks like the Leafs will be losing Marner for nothing, or next to nothing, as opposed to getting a superstar in return.
With Marner refusing the deal to Carolina, signing with the Hurricanes just a few months later would be more salt in the wounds of Leafs fans because if he wanted to go to Carolina, why would he not have accepted the trade in March?
It shows a lack of awareness for the city, and while he might feel a bit disrespected at times; he's going to be vilified more for doing this.
While Marner may not be the best player in the NHL, he is among the best in the league and could be the first player to sign a record-breaking contract as the salary cap rises.
Marner had a career-best 102 points in 81 games and has consistently hovered around the 100-point mark since 2018-19.
If Marner does wind up leaving Toronto, he will surely become one of the highest-paid, if not the highest-paid, players in the NHL; whether or not he truly deserves it is another question entirely.
