If the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to make a splash defensively, instead of Rasmus Andersson, they should turn their focus on pushing to acquire Dougie Hamilton.
If you were to ask the Toronto Maple Leafs what they needed most this Christmas besides a way out of their slump, is a clear direction on who to add to their backend.
Toronto needs to learn to embrace the Dougie
However, there's one name that has always stood out above the rest, and it's not just because he's got the height advantage.
If the Toronto Maple Leafs were really wanting to make a difference on their backend they would go after New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton instead of any of those previous names.
First and foremost, he fits the physical profile that seems all-too important for Brad Treliivng and Craig Berube. He's 6'6, 230 pounds and hits light a freight train. But he's also got silky smooth hands and is a much better skater than you'd expect from someone so big.
Secondly, he would give the team a true threat from the point. The team lacks a true game changer with a shot that can burn traffic and create a lot of trouble for goaltenders. Hamilton's shot speed has hovered around 68-70 MPH on average, with his hardest shots hitting 92 MPH+.
This season, Hamilton has struggled a bit with only eight points in 33 games (4 goals, 4 assists) however had a stretch of seven straight seasons with 10+ goals and 35+ points; for his career he has 509 points in 868 games (155 goals, 354 assists).
The only one who is really firing them off at the net right now is Philippe Myers, who has the hardest shot amongst defenseman this season at 94.5 MPH.
While that's great, he's not a #1 d-man, nor is he anywhere near the level of Hamilton overall.
Bringing in Hamilton won't be easy, but it's worth it
One issue that could affect Hamilton coming over is the fact he makes a lot of money; $9-million to be precise.
However, he is only under contract for two more years after this season, so he wouldn't affect their finances if they decide to go after Connor McDavid or re-sign Auston Matthews.
Meanwhile, Hamilton can help solidify Toronto's defense and be a great mentor to names like William Villeneuve, Ben Danford, and potentially Victor Johansson.
The team has never really had a blueline threat that can shoot since who? Dion Phaneuf? Cody Franson? Bryan McCabe?
So, even though Andersson would provide Toronto with another staunch defender with puck-moving capabilities, Dougie Hamilton has more to offer and at least has some measure of control compared to the Calgary defender.
