Gavin McKenna is solely focused on the NHL heading into this offseason and made sure no other distractions like the World Championships get in the way.
In the wake of Ivar Stenberg's incredible performance as an 18-year old at the IIHF World Championships, all eyes are on Gavin McKenna and his choice to skip playing for Canada but it's due to his sole focus wanting to be on making his NHL debut and preparing for life as the newest member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Stenberg has eight points in seven games, but just showcased some serious offensive flair against Slovakia, where he sent a defender flying before potting it top shelf:

McKenna has to be prepared for this season because there's going to be millions of eyes on him at all times, and he has to make sure that he comes in strong and never takes his foot off the gas in Toronto.
The fans are desperate for a saviour and he can be just that, as long as he's ready to make that leap.
McKenna says no thank you to Canada as he prepares for life as an NHL superstar
You could argue some more seasoning against NHL players would actually be beneficial and taking part in the World Championships with likely future teammate John Tavares on Team Canada makes a lot of sense, although it seems that McKenna doesn't want any distractions stopping his preparation.
CAA Hockey, the agency that represents McKenna stated on May 8th that McKenna was going to hang backend focus on his NHL development, with the fact that Canada was already so deep being a critical factor:
It's better for his development to stay back, prepare for the NHL Combine and start his summer training. I know we thought he was going, but it just makes more sense. (Canada) has a deep team.
For what it's worth, it seems the focus on the NHL workload is motivating McKenna to get better prepared and his agent admitted the excitement heading into 2026-27:
Gavin's very excited. He's in great spirits and is excited about the summer and what's next. He's just getting to his training and getting to start to plan for next year.
It's fairly impressive to see such maturity and transparency from an 18-year old kid but McKenna knows how important being properly prepared both mentally and physically for the road ahead is.
The Worlds would have been great for the physical, but he would have drawn away focus from being 100% ready for the combine.
Toronto is getting a fully prepared and motivated Gavin McKenna and that's dangerous for the rest of the league
There's a ton of hype surrounding McKenna no doubt, but it's only how he handles that pressure will we know the type of player he is.
Considering he's risen to the occasion time and time again, has steadily shown generational-level talent and now solely focused on being the best version of himself he can be? It's Toronto's dream and the NHL's nightmare.
McKenna had a total combined 310 points over his last 3.5 seasons with the WHL and NCAA (also including World Juniors) in only 187 games (1.65 PPG) and has looked like one of the most creative, dynamic, and explosive playmakers in recent memory.
Having that level of talent with a head already deeply focused on making sure he's a better overall player is nothing short of impressive and the Maple Leafs would be doing themselves a disservice by passing over him. He's not only going to make MLSE a lot of money, but he's genuinely a franchise-changing player.
The NHL might not be able to prepare for a McKenna who is already complete before he steps on the ice, and that means only good things for Toronto now and going forward.
Do you think Gavin McKenna will be prepared to play in the NHL?
