Gavin McKenna took the ice for the first time in a Maple Leafs jersey on Thursday and it signalled a new era in Toronto hockey with 'The Wizard of Whitehorse.'
The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Gavin McKenna first overall and it signalled that the team is going to head into a new season with not only one of the best prospects in quite some time, but a renewed excitement in hockey's biggest market and it's got a lot of fans speculating how he'll adjust.
Honest, it doesn't seem like he'll have too many issues but the first question of the entire McKenna era is when is he actually going to be getting on the ice? We would love to see what he can offer even if it's just through practices and drills, even just to satiate our appetite before the season opens up.
The first skate in blue and white for Gavin McKenna is what everyone has been waiting for
Well we don't have to wait long as McKenna was the first on the ice for Toronto's Development Camp and looked to be front and centre of the entire affair:
-
-
McKenna was seen taking instructions alongside other prospects like Harry Nansi, Tyler Hopkins and Tinus Luc Koblar but by showing his maturity and being the first one on the ice means that he is going to take every single second he can to prepare and improve for the season ahead.
-
McKenna is a part of Team Gilmour which also includes Hopkins, Nansi, Koblar, but also Ethan MacKenzie, Juuso Ainasto and Patriks Plumins - three of Toronto's 2026 draft selections.
-
It also didn't take long for him to showcase his stuff as he had an early breakaway in scrimmage and looked dangerous despite not scoring:

What stood out on day one of McKenna's Maple Leafs tenure
First off let's temper expectations. This is day one, and you're just going to be getting McKenna dipping his feet into the water. You're not going to see him start making highlight reel plays because that's not what this is about.
Development Camp isn't the preseason, it's meant to ease prospects into the NHL style while also giving coaches, scouts, and GMs a chance to see who may be ready sooner than others. You're trying to see what McKenna's comfort level is like as he makes a very difficult transition.
In saying that however, he definitely looked like he was ready for whatever is coming ahead. He looked crisp and fluid, was active and constantly listening, and he looked as much the player we expect at least from a character standpoint.
He knows the spotlight is on him and that there's a ton of expectations, but wants to make sure he takes everything in stride and learns. He isn't afraid of failure even if that in and of itself is a rarity, and this is his best chance to prepare prior to actual game action.
There was nothing you wouldn't expect from Gavin McKenna on day one, and it's just the first step in his journey towards potentially being one of the greatest of all time.
Are you excited to see Gavin McKenna play in his first preseason game?
