At the time, the 6'5" forward was playing with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. He had been pushed down the depth charts as the team acquired more winger prospects, making his path to the NHL difficult at best. According to Han, this lead to him requesting a trade in 2018.
Luckily for the Leafs, they found another solution. Han, who was working in player development with the team, worked together with Sheldon Keefe to move Engvall to center, where he would eventually learn to master the position, earning a callup during the 2019-20 season.
Pierre played with the Toronto Maple Leafs but never excelled. He has been a regular at the NHL level since then, playing 318 career NHL games so far, 226 of which came with the Leafs. Of course, the Leafs would later trade Engvall anyways as they sent him to the New York Islanders in exchange for a 2024 3rd round pick.
