The San Jose Sharks have made a trade to acquire defenseman Ryan Ellis from the Flyers with a former Maple Leaf also involved.
On Sunday afternoon it was announced that the San Jose Sharks had beefed up their blueline by acquiring defenseman Ryan Ellis from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for
Carl Grundstrom and
Artem Guryev.
Hilariously, Ellis himself piped up on X with a quick little joke before obviously heading to California:
Ellis, 34, hasn't played since 2021, and this is clearly a salary dump of behalf of the Flyers as we head into the season.
For his career, he has 275 points in 566 career games (76 goals, 199 assists) with the Nashville Predators and Philadelphia Flyers.
Carl Grundstrom's NHL Journey Since Leaving Maple Leafs
Going the other way is Grundstrom, a player who has been on the move a bunch in his career, this marking his third trade since 2019.
He was drafted 57th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016, and skated in no games with the team, instead being packaged in the Jake Muzzin trade.
Grundstrom did appear in 44 games with the Marlies, registering 32 points (16 goals, 16 assists) and won a Calder Cup with them in 2017-18.
With the Kings however, he posted 67 points in 236 games before they dealt him to the Sharks for
Kyle Burroughs.
Guryev, 22, is a towering defenseman drafted 135th overall by the Sharks in 2021, and spent last season with Wichita of the ECHL.
Guryev registered five points in 47 games (2 goals, 3 assists) and 26 PIM.
Hopefully Grundstrom will be able to find his footing in Philadelphia and he goes from a team firmly in the middle of a rebuild to one who is starting one and could use him to build around.
San Jose has been busy this off-season, acquiring
Ryan Reaves,
Carey Price, and now Grundstrom as they try to raise their cap ceiling ahead of the 2025 season.
