Edmonton has acquired Tristan Jarry from the Pittsburgh Penguins multiple sources confirm on Friday, as the Oilers finally get their goaltender.
Friday is expected to be a hectic day in the NHL and it seems to have started early. It was reported earlier in the day that the Penguins and Oilers were working out a deal to send Tristan Jarry to the Edmonton Oilers.
The news was first reported by Elliotte Friedman on X:
This was shortly later confirmed by multiple sources including Ryan Rishaug of TSN, and The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.
Rishaug also confirmed that goaltender Stuart Skinner is headed back to Pittsburgh in the deal.
It brings an end to the mystery of who the Oilers were going to pursue in net, and it also ends Skinner's time with the team after a polarizing tenure that saw many highs but also some severe lows.
Jarry also needed a fresh start, and with questions about his contract and how much he's actually being utilized recently; it's a great chance for him to break out.
These aren't the only two pieces swapping however. Pittsburgh also acquired defenseman Brett Kulak, and Edmonton's 2029 second-round pick meanwhile Jarry as well as forward Sam Poulin are headed out west.
While you wouldn't classify it as a world-changing trade, it does give both teams an important reset in net.
Skinner, 27 has an 11-8-4 record with a 2.83 GAA and .891 SV%, meanwhile Jarry, 30, has a 9-3-1 record with a 2.66 GAA and .909 SV%.
Fans react to Penguins/Oilers trade
It was a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to fan reaction, as some in Edmonton were sad to see Skinner go and that he deserved less hate than he got.
However there were some who were more than happy to have Jarry come in, not for his goaltending but potentially what it means down the line.
However the general consensus around both fanbases is that the Penguins fleeced the Oilers and with the history of Jarry's injuries and being a few years older than Skinner; you can start to see why.
While the initial shock is due to wear off shortly, and there's a lot of potential for both Skinner and Jarry to come in and help their respective new clubs, you can't help but think this was a masterclass from Dubas; who also didn't need to retain any salary either.
We still need to see how both players will work out but the initial deal nonetheless has fans and the rest of the league on notice. Things are starting to heat up, with this trade potentially the catalyst to kick everything off.
This is a developing story. More details to come.
