Nick Foligno is on the move to join his brother in Minnesota as the Chicago Blackhawks have traded the veteran forward for future considerations as the Blackhawks give their captain a chance to play with his brother before his career is over.
With 2,193 combined NHL games between the two, Marcus and Nick Foligno have never been on the same team. Surprising too considering how both players have shifted around though Marcus has seemingly been glued to the Wild lineup for the better part of a decade.
But with his career winding down, the Blackhawks and Wild decided to make it happen for the Chicago captain as they sent Nick to Minnesota in exchange for future considerations.
The reason for the lack of a real return is more due to the fact that this is a move not focused on improving or acquiring assets. It's a feel good moment and given that Foligno has already dealt with a lot of unfortunate news this year -- it's a bright spot for the rest of the season.
Wild take on full Foligno deal in respectful and heartfelt gesture
Minnesota taking on the entirety of his $4.5-million deal is also a testament to what this deal is about, which is making sure the two brothers get a chance to share the ice (and give Nick a chance at a Stanley Cup too).
Foligno, 38, has 11 points in 37 games this season along with a plus-2, and 87 hits in 12:48 TOI. The one-time Maple Leaf has 608 points in 1,270 NHL games split between five teams (Columbus, Ottawa, Chicago, Boston, Toronto).
Plus he'll be a great leader for guys like Matt Boldy, and Brock Faber; guiding them to be the next elite group of superstars in the NHL though hard work, leadership, and teamwork and is an invaluable piece to any locker room.
But the main focus here is the fact that both Foligno brothers can skate together even for a little bit, and while the jury is still out regarding whether or not Nick is still going to be playing past this year, you can bet both men are going to cherish this time while they can.
