Elliotte Friedman reports that Noah Dobson might be available on the trade market, and with time ticking away, Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving needs to make a move.
There's a lot of discussion going around surrounding what the Maple Leafs are going to do this upcoming offseason. A departing
Mitch Marner,
several key players still unsigned, and a DNA change is all part of what's expected to be a hectic summer.
While there are a bevy of free agents the team can target, they may be looking at the trade block as well, and there's one particular name who has recently popped up as a potential candidate: Noah Dobson.
Noah Dobson being floated around by New York: Elliotte Friedman
I have heard quietly the Islanders are testing the market on him. I think they just want to know. I know there's been a lot of Romanov rumors, but Dobson is the guy to keep an eye on.
I don't even know if they do it at this point but they know if he is what he can be, he's an eight-figure guy right, since you're a year away from free agency, you have a few different things to do.
Sign him now and trade him later if it doesn't work, try a one-year deal and walk him to free agency, but that's risky; or you can deal him now. I think the Islanders are investigating all possibilities.
I think they know he is going to be an eight-figure guy, and they need to decide 'Are we going to pay that or is someone else going to pay that?' - Elliotte Friedman
It's not surprising to hear him being floated about, as Dobson was a potential trade deadline target for some teams including the Toronto Maple Leafs.
But it begs the question: Should Toronto target him?
What a coup it would be if Brad Treliving could find a way to acquire Dobson, considering the incredible amount of potential and upside he brings.
A right-handed shooting defenseman,
Dobson is a speedy playmaker who isn't afraid to let it fly from the point and has fantastic vision.
In 71 games this season he did have only 39 points (10G, 29A) however is only two seasons removed from a 70-point campaign (10G, 60A) and has hit double digit goals in each of his last four seasons.
Plus he's not afraid to hit, he blocks a ton of shots, he's a huge presence at 6'4 and can eat up a ton of minutes.
With Morgan Rielly not the player he once was, and with a rough contract there's a chance
he could be sent out and Dobson brings in the perfect replacement.
He can run the power play for the next half decade, he's a better defender than Rielly, and with Toronto wanting a big DNA change; it's hard to argue he can't offer that and then some.
So it would behoove Brad Treliving to at least try and see if New York is interested in parting with Dobson. It might be expensive, but I think Toronto will gladly take the hit if it brings in their future star defenseman.
