Eeli Tolvanen's new contract makes the Maple Leafs' Jack Roslovic deal look expensive

Eeli Tolvanen has agreed to a one-year, $1.5-million deal with the New York Rangers, giving Toronto an uncomfortable comparison to Jack Roslovic's two-year, $8-million contract.

After scoring 12 goals and notching a total of 36 points in 78 games with the Seattle Kraken last season, Eeli Tolvanen is reportedly about to sign a 1-year contract with the New York Rangers worth $1.5 million.

This is in stark contrast to Jack Roslovic, who had similar numbers and signed a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Simply put, the numbers are not adding up.

Tolvanen matched Roslovic's point total for $2.5M less while bringing a much heavier game

Last season, both Tolvanen and Roslovic finished with 36 points, although Roslovic was able to do it in 69 games. Furthermore, Roslovic had a stronger goal total with 21 compared to Tolvanen's 12.

Had the Leafs signed Tolvanen, they would have gained a forward who sacrifices the body for his team. Last season, he had 187 hits and 81 blocked shots. A stark contrast to Roslovic's 46 hits and 27 blocks.

The Leafs spent money this summer trying to be hard to play against. Tolvanen at $1.5 million is a much better value in that department than $4 million for Roslovic.

Toronto paid Roslovic for more scoring, but Tolvanen just showed that comparable production and far more physical engagement were available much later for substantially less.

Toronto committed early to their bottom-six rebuild, and immediately went out to secure Roslovic, Teddy Blueger, Colton Sission, and Brandon Duhaime.

However, Tolvanen remaining available until September is evidence that the market has softened, and guys are going for much less. Tolvanen does not prove Roslovic was a bad signing. He does show that Toronto paid a significant premium to lock in its middle-six offence early rather than wait for the market to soften.

Tolvanen doesn't prove Roslovic will be the worse player. He does prove Toronto paid a significant premium to make its decisions two months earlier.
