Easton Cowan admitted he needed to be better after Game 4's heartbreaking loss, and in Game 5 he absolutely delivered on his promise in a big, big way.

The Toronto Marlies lost a heartbreaker in Game 4 of the Calder Cup Playoffs after Easton Cowan had a rough turnover leading to the game-winner for Wilkes-Barre. Cowan admitted he needed to come out with more fire in Game 5 and after a two-point performance and a lot of intensity - he followed through on his promise.

Cowan's turnover was certainly classified as a play that happened due to Cowan trying to take control of the game in the waning minutes, but his hands were too fast for his brain it seems. He admitted that wasn't acceptable and knowing he needs to get himself back on track, he had all the motivation in the world.

Easton Cowan promised to be better in Game 5 and the Cowboy delivered spectacularly

Which is why it's legitimately awesome to see Cowan at only 21 take the reins and run with them. Cowan added a goal and an assist while also adding 12 PIM as he was involved in some fisticuffs and it helped secure the Marlies a 5-1 win.

Cowan first got on the board with an assist on Bo Groulx's fifth goal of the postseason as he shovelled the puck just past the Wilkes-Barre defender and sprung Groulx for a very impressive shot to beat Sergei Murashov:

Then Cowan added his sixth of the playoffs to open the scoring in the third after some fancy stick work that gave him and open lane as he fired it past Murashov:

He also ended up getting a 10-minute misconduct after being part of a huge scrap that involved teammates Michael Pezzetta and Landon Sim; both of whom also got misconducts.

Cowan has now pushed his postseason totals to 12 points in 16 games (6 goals, 6 assists) along with 16 PIM and a minus-7. Though his defensive numbers haven't been great, if he can keep coming up clutch then it may not matter in the end.

He also fought through injury issues and missed both Games 2 and 3, but managed to make a heroic return in Game 4 much to the Marlies fans' surprise.

Toronto Maple Leafs have an absolute dog in Easton Cowan which is exactly what Auston Matthews and William Nylander wanted

When Matthews and Nylander were talking about how they want some dogs up front, it's a good thing that Toronto doesn't have to look too far.

Talk about a dog-like mentality. Cowan scored an incredible solo effort, had the foresight to put a perfect pass on Groulx stick (and credit to him for the shot) and also decided that he wanted to make sure that he got himself that Gordie Howe hat-trick.

That type of intensity and clutch factor is something Toronto has lacked heavily in the playoffs, and if Cowan is going to be this aggressive and productive in the team's toughest moments - while also not dwelling on the failures - is going to be huge for his growth.

Cowan should likely slot on the second line with Nylander. If the two can find some early season chemistry it'll certainly benefit the both of them, but at least Nylander knows he has Cowan who will fight hard for pucks, throw hits, be aggressive but also have the wherewithal to contribute offensively.

We all looked at Cowan as someone who can be the next Mitch Marner but we may have been looking a little past what else makes him important which is that fire and that intensity he brings every shift.

Personally, it's a lot more like Toronto's 2026 version of Darcy Tucker and that's honestly the best thing for Toronto's superstars.

Just ask Mats Sundin.
