A new report coming out of the hockey world has shown that Mitch Marner's camp may be acting in bad faith when it comes to negotiating with the Maple Leafs.

With all the talk about Mitch Marner sticking around, it seems that for every one speculative rumour comes five more. Several teams are expected to make big offers for the pending free agent, but the Maple Leafs are still hopeful for a turnaround.

When it comes to heading out of town, it seems that Marner is all but set on that decision, but seems that he's made that decision for awhile.
Which is why it's frustrating to hear at every turn Marner was not willing to help the team in any way, shape or form.
If he truly cared about the team, it seems that Marner would have at least entertained moving somewhere for other pieces; especially if he was already dead set on leaving.
So where do the Maple Leafs go from here?

Toronto needs to move on, Mitch Marner clearly has

They need to stay true to their word and change their identity, and that starts with accepting the fact that Marner is tired of being here and not winning, and wants to be one of the wealthiest players in the league.
Which will hopefully make it easier for them to move on. It won't be easy, and the offensive part of the game is going to take an even bigger hit than this year's.
But it's part of the plan. Toronto is becoming a more defensive unit collectively, and the stress put on a grit and grind mentality doesn't lend itself to an explosion of offense.
When Craig Berube's Blues won the Stanley Cup, their highest point producer that season was Ryan O'Reilly with 77, followed by Vladimir Tarasenko with 68. They didn't have a Marner-esque point producer but through a collective effort were able to produce.
The team is only as whole as the sum of its parts, and if the team's identity wants to change from the 'Core Four' to 'Core Values' then it starts with letting Marner walk, even though it hurts it's for nothing.
So Brad Treliving and company can shift gears to other free agents and trades, ones that will help 'change the DNA' of the team instead, which will not only be cheaper; but might actually end up being a better choice than Marner in the end.
