Free agent veteran forward Corey Perry has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the team wants to make some drastic changes to their DNA this offseason.
Even though the Toronto Maple Leafs are seeing
free agent targets being signed away left and right, and potential trade targets headed elsewhere, it has been an eerily quiet summer so far for the team, but there's still lots of time.
There's also lots of free agents who could certainly help out the team, and while they are going to push hard for Florida's trio of Bennett, Ekblad, and Marchand; that's a very expensive proposal.
Going cheap might be a better option, but that doesn't mean they are bad.
One name they should focus on however is someone who has a ton of Stanley Cup experience, is one of the best players of the modern era, and can add the DNA change they need; that being Corey Perry.
Corey Perry would bring new life to the Maple Leafs even at his age
Even at 40 years old,
Perry is putting in the work. He's been to two straight Stanley Cup Finals, is still putting up solid offensive numbers even if they aren't at the level it once was, and isn't afraid to get dirty when it counts.
He's not going to be a first-line option but giving him a third or fourth-line role would give Toronto a brand new offensive weapon, who isn't afraid to crash the net, and he'll get physical when needed.
But it's his playoff production this season that was impressive, scoring 14 points (10G, 4A) in 22 games, and has a career 141 points in 237 games; a stat the puts him top amongst active players.
How much would Corey Perry cost the Maple Leafs?
He's been linked to the Maple Leafs twice before, and he's been open to moving to the team in the past.
The cost to bring him along won't be much either, given that he signed for only $1-million this past season. While he should be given a slight bump in pay, it still won't even sniff a portion of what other free agents will get.
Signing Perry to a one-year deal for $1.5-million to patrol their fourth line, work the second PP unit and be the playoff producer they've been looking for is a bargain deal, and much like
John Tavares has been fairly durable even at his age.
It gives the team the edge they sorely need, and he isn't going to take any guff from anyone. It's not a contract that's going to hinder the team, but it certainly can help them in spades.
