As the Connor McDavid contract story keeps adding new chapters, a previous interview from a decade ago shows that a chance to come home is in the cards still.
Reports surfaced that Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid could have some reservations about re-signing with the team, and might test free agency in what might be the greatest class of available talent ever in NHL history.
While all signs point to him sticking around in Edmonton, you can truly never say never in the world of hockey, and a team such as his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs are going to make a strong push to bring him aboard.
Unsurprisingly, it's the one team that has been heavily focused on as a potential destination, and if you had to ask McDavid he would agree.
That is if it was a decade ago.
What Connor McDavid Said in His 2015 Interview About the Maple Leafs
In the wake of his future,
an old interview with McDavid has resurfaced that shows his true feelings towards joining his childhood team and he was very blunt and candid in his response:
That would be an absolute dream come true. It's pretty crazy to even think about.
I'm from Toronto. You have to be a Leafs fan. So, of course, I was. Of course. My dad was a Leafs fan. Every Saturday night watching Hockey Night in Canada would be my favourite time.
It also seems like McDavid has an understanding of the importance of winning in Toronto should he decide to come in:
Listen, if a team could ever win in Toronto, it would be unbelievable. Whoever won would have the key to the city. It would be something that people would never forget.
So, playing in a place like that, it has its perks and it has its downfalls. But it's one of the best places in the league.
Why McDavid's Old Comments About the Maple Leafs Are Sparking Buzz Again
Well if there was ever a ringing endorsement for an NHL club that certainly sounds like one, and for McDavid to feel so strongly previously and not exactly ignoring other offers; there's a lot of potential to be had.
Toronto is no doubt going to be pushing hard for McDavid should he decide to be a free agent, and while they have to compete with a lot of other teams with more money they do hold that very unique advantage.
Imagine the five man unit they could put out on the power play: Knies, McDavid, Matthews, Nylander, Tavares. That along should strike immense fear into opponents and having McDavid feed Matthews will feed families for years.
It's legitimately wild that we are even having this discussion after it felt almost a certainty that McDavid would be a career Oiler.
But this is the strange, strange world of the NHL. Anything can happen, including #97 in blue and white.
