It's not hard to see that Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has a ton of work ahead of him even with a new lineup, but might have a hard time improving further.

All the talk this past offseason focused on the loss of Mitch Marner and whether or not the Maple Leafs would be able to make a replacement move to bring in someone on par with his level of talent.
Linked to several big names for months, they opted for a deeper and more balanced strategy, and while it looks good for the playoffs, the results thus far have been mixed to say the least.
There's a lot of time to get a deal done, however with a lack of assets and under immense pressure from fans, can Brad Treliving get a deal done?
Well according to NHL Insider Darren Dreger, yes; but he's going to have some stiff competition.
The insider explained that while Toronto obviously wants to improve and add a top-six forward, the Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks are both looking to improve their top-six as well which leaves Brad Treliving stuck:
Look around...you don't think the Canadiens tried to add a 2nd line center? The Canucks have been looking for a 2C for a couple of years; Toronto, Treliving has publicly stated he's looking for a top 6 forward and continues to look.

Asset management has never been the Maple Leafs' strong suit and history has shown that the team will often jump to get rid of some premium pieces if it means winning now.

The Pressure Is Quietly Building on Brad Treliving

While that helps on paper, it not only handicaps their future when it comes to drafts pick selections, but using those future assets in deals. Toronto owns one first-round pick in the next three years, and only three picks in 2026.
Good luck getting a deal done when teams like Montreal have nine picks in 2026 alone. Toronto would not only need to package someone like a Ben Danford or maybe even Easton Cowan but their last bit of future hope.
We are only two games into the regular season and the speculation is already picking up. The team needs a chance to get their feet under them first before Brad Treliving rushes to make a move.
They've tried to accelerate their success in the past and it blew up in their face time and time again, and Brad Treliving has the chance to improve, but lacks those true needle movers.
So is this the year that it actually comes together? We have no clue and there is literally no indication that the improvements Toronto makes will get them over the hump.
