Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs place three players on the trade market
After making some big signings this off-season, Brad Treliving and the Maple Leafs are up against the cap, and it's led to three players put on the trade block.
The Toronto Maple Leafs needed to make some big moves this off-season after another playoff disappointment, and on day one of free agency, there were busy acquiring solid veterans. Now however, it's pushed them right up against the salary cap, and with teams out there having plenty of cap space, the moves they can make have become very clear.
According to TSN's Chris Johnston, there are several Maple Leafs players that have now been placed on the trading block, and could be moved anytime over the next few months:
"They would look at moving Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Timothy Liljegren in the right deal. I should be very clear, that is not to say they are trying to get rid of them at all costs, but I think that because of the Leafs' salary cap, they are pretty tight up against it," said Johnston on the latest edition of 'The CJ Show'. "Really, at this point of the off-season, their blueline looks different, [they] obviously made the move in net, but I think they will have to get creative to address any changes they want to make at forward." He would go on to clarify that while the players are seen as available, they aren't actively being shopped, and if the right deal comes along that Treliving can't pass up, they'd pull the trigger.
"Those types of players could be had, but I don't have any reason to believe anything is close or will happen. Entering this offseason, they were open-minded about that. The reason those players have the contracts they do, they do provide a function. It's just, if they could upgrade by moving those players to create the cap room, I think they do so."
After their first-round loss, the Maple Leafs have clearly been aggressive on the free agent market, and with the chance to make some noise via trade, look for Treliving to be equally as aggressive.
