Even though he's been committed to the changes of the Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews still may have a new home on his mind.
The one thing the Maple Leafs needed to ensure this season was to give Auston Matthews the confidence that the team was going to make the changes necessary to give him a fighting chance while he's still under contract especially after such a dismal 2025-26 season that ended on a sour note.
But now with a revamped roster, new coaches, new front office staff, and a clear onus on trying to win as soon as possible, the captain has to certainly feel better about the moves being made and with the hopes that he'll re-sign when his deal is up in 2028 - things are looking up.
Though that doesn't necessarily guarantee that Toronto will be fighting for a Stanley Cup let alone be in a playoff spot, and we'll have to see how the first couple months of the season play out before we can start to get a handle on what we can expect.
Another failed season could accelerate the Matthews trade talks substantially
Hopefully though it starts off hot because Matthews may not feel too good if it doesn't.
According to Bleacher Report's Lyle Richardson, Matthews won't be happy if the team starts off slow this season, and with only a year left before he's a free agent, could forgo his final year and ask for a way out:
The cause for concern was Matthews' contract, which is set to expire in 2028. Some observers wondered if he might request a trade if the Maple Leafs failed to improve their roster this summer. So far, there's no indication that Matthews wants out.
However, if the Maple Leafs stumble in 2026-27, Matthews could decide not to waste the final season of his contract with a club in need of a rebuild. A trade request before the March 2027 deadline wouldn't be out of the question, with the remaining year on his contract making him a more valuable trade target.
Obviously this is a worst-case scenario situation, and we truly do need to see how the season plays out before we get a handle on things. Heck, there hasn't even been a preseason game yet nor are they finished making moves. We don't know the full product until October.
But it is interesting to hear that Matthews may decide to head out of town despite everything pointing to his full commitment to Toronto.
Matthews' commitment to the Maple Leafs is results-based now
Given that he has already spent a decade here without any real success, the commitment to the team is less built around loyalty and more around actually winning.
But Matthews needs to see success; tangible success. He had his best shot in 2024-25 but his team imploded and were dumped by Florida, and while one could argue he needed to do more - there were certainly other factors that played into things.
Besides that though, he hasn't really done much and has never made it out of the second round. If he's committed to at least seeing out his deal, he wants to know that he has a chance to win while doing it. It was fine a few years ago when the team was good in the regular season yet a failure in the playoffs because there was still hope and time.
The Core Four is dead, people are only getting older, players are regressing. This isn't the 2022 Maple Leafs anymore guys, we've only got limited time left.
Right now, the only thing that Matthews is concerned about is whether or not his knee is going to hols up to a full season especially with so many expectations. Though it's not the only thing on his mind, and if things don't turn out right this time around?
There's likely no more time left.
Do you think Auston Matthews wants to stay with or leave the Maple Leafs?
