The Toronto Maple Leafs are going to celebrate Auston Matthews' gold medal but for the captain he seems focused more on getting back in the win column than anything.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs look to end their losing streak, they are going to at least have one positive to look forward to as they will be celebrating captain Auston Matthews' gold medal that he secured during the 2026 Olympics.
They are going to be up against their provincial rivals and while they are more than capable of getting past them, the last few games have shown that perhaps this season could just be considered a wash though they will get Easton Cowan back for the first time in a month.
It's something to look forward to for sure but if you were to ask the captain himself, it's just business as usual as he tries to guide him team back on the right path.

Matthews not concerned about Olympic celebration

Matthews was asked about how he'll feel going into the game knowing he'll be celebrated for his gold medal, and noted how badly the team needs the win:
I don't know. We've got great fans, we've got passionate fans. I'm just focused on tonight's game, getting ready for that, doing whatever I can to help our team win for a game that we desperately need.
Desperate is an understatement, as the Maple Leafs have been dominated since coming out of the break and Matthews needs to show that Olympic dominance he had for the two weeks he was away.

Toronto in serious trouble if they lose vs. Senators

He has two assists over his last two games but also went minus-four against Florida, and hasn't shown that one-man show that he was capable of during the 2026 Games.
If Toronto suffers another loss, then it really won't matter how much they celebrate Matthews' accomplishments because it will be yet another dismal failure in his time with the Maple Leafs. They need to do something to salvage the next couple years because if not, then he very well might walk.
All we can hope for is that seeing Matthews' accomplishments sparks the rest of the team to follow their leader and start performing up to expectations or they may not be part of the contingent much longer.
