Anthony Stolarz's weight has become an unexpected problem for the Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz is listed at 6-foot-6, although his weight is at 257 pounds, which is not ideal given his injury history.

Anthony Stolarz will be the Toronto Maple Leafs' backup this season, as Sergei Bobrovsky was brought in to be the veteran starter. However, with training camp beginning today, Stolarz has elicited some head-turns. This is because, according to Kyle Cushman, he has been listed at a hefty 257 pounds.

While his 6-foot-6 frame certainly contributes to his weight, there are comparables that showcase how this is actually not good news for the Leafs.

Anthony Stolarz comes in overweight

According to Hockey Reference and NHL.com, goaltenders with similar heights have consistently been playing at much lower weights.

For instance, 6-foot-7 Ben Bishop played at 210 pounds. 6-foot-5 Pekka Rinne was 217 pounds. Jacob Markstrom is the same height as Stolarz and weighs 207 pounds.

Carrying this extra weight is not good for Stolarz, as it can make him a lot more sluggish between the pipes. Furthermore, it is extra wear and tear on his joints. For a goaltender who has dealt with injury problems, it is something you have to consider.

Anthony Stolarz's history with injuries is a second concern

Last season, Stolarz missed a large chunk of games with an upper-body injury. He eventually returned, and while he struggled mightily between the pipes, you can also say that the rest of the team wasn't good either.

This season is meant to be a reset for the franchise, as well as Stolarz. However, coming in close to 260 pounds certainly isn't the most ideal way for him to get going.

Of course, now that training camp has arrived, there is an opportunity for Stolarz to get in shape and shed some of this excess weight. That doesn't take away from the fact that the Leafs should be concerned until he does.

This is a big season for the franchise, and they cannot afford for one of their goalies to miss time because he couldn't keep the pounds off.
