Maple Leafs analyst Jay Rosehill was quite forward with what he expects from Max Domi this season and warned him that he better show up to make a difference.

The expectations of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2025-26 season are some pretty lofty ones considering they lost one of their biggest offensive producers and are looking to play a more collective role that may lead to success however isn't without its growing pains.
New additions like Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy are expected to play huge roles in the offense even if it might take a bit of time to get acclimated, so hopefully they get their sooner rather than later.

The Analyst's Message That Leafs Fans Can't Ignore

However for Maple Leafs analyst and Leafs Morning Take co-host Jay Rosehill, it's not the new players that need to bring the heat, but a veteran who struggled mightily last season: Max Domi.
Rosehill explained that Domi is going to need to bring his 'A' game to contribute, especially if he is getting top line minutes, and should channel a former Maple Leafs icon to do so:
You know, when they signed him I thought he's the type of guy we need, but I just need him to play, I need him to be involved more.

He needs to be more intense and more agitating into being; I don't like to compare guys, but be like a Darcy Tucker, a guy who would do anything it wouldn't really matter. He would do things to dictate the game, or take over and demand respect.

This year, Max was trying to quietly score goals, but I think you gotta do more. You gotta play with more passion, be more intense, and I think he is capable of that.
Last season was a tough one for Domi, registering only 33 points in 74 games (8 goals, 25 assists) which is his second-lowest point total in his career.

Why Max Domi's Role Could Define the Leafs' Season

Now, Rosehill isn't asking Domi to emulate his father and start throwing hands with everyone he runs into, but to emulate Tucker would be a pretty solid way to go about things.
Tucker was a hero at times and would fight, hit, agitate, mock, taunt, and do anything he could to play mind games with his opponents. Did it work all the time? No, but it did help him score 215 goals over his career so clearly it works to be a pest (ask Brad Marchand).
With Dakota Joshua the resident agitator now, a lot of the focus is going to be on trying to goad him into things, so adding another dimension gives Craig Berube the flexibility to use Domi in high leverage situations.
Provided they protect him on defense, Domi can be allowed to run around with reckless abandon, constantly pressuring and trying to frustrate opponents into making unforced errors, and if his team can capitalize on those chances, who needs Mitch Marner? (Okay, maybe we're getting ahead of ourselves)
But with his role potentially on Auston Matthews' first line, he needs to be the Tucker to Matthews' Sundin.
If we can take a trip back to 2001 in the playoffs, but with this current iteration and deeply built roster...there could be a Stanley Cup in the near future.
