Almost nobody from the old Maple Leafs hockey department kept the same job under John Chayka

The old Maple Leafs are a thing of the past as John Chayka's new administration has undergone some positional changes with new roles doled out to executives.

On Monday, the Maple Leafs made some big changes to their front office which included letting 20-year team physician Dr. Noah Forman go as they look to add some new faces even as we head into September.

But that wasn't the only change, as the front office also got a makeover when it came to their roles, with several positions being adjusted to better reflect their specific roles.

In a slew of changes, only Director of Goaltending and Development Curtis McElhinney and Director of Team Operations Brad Lynn kept their original positions without any changes.

But besides that, it's a big overhaul. Assistant GM Ryan Hardy now becomes the head of Front Office and Hockey Operations, meanwhile Reid Mitchell moved from Director, Hockey and Scouting Operations to Senior Director, Hockey Operations; Front Office and Hockey Operations.

New hires JP Perpich, Dan Palango and Brad Rossen were also officially added to the team staff page online, meanwhile assistant coach Denver Manderson also received the title of Director, Minor League Development - Maple Leafs, and Assistant Coach; Marlies Hockey Operations and Team Staff.

In total, the Maple Leafs made 16 changes either by adjusting roles or by adding personnel to the official staff list, which pretty much signals that the team has officially cemented themselves in a new era led by a brand new team.

Though with McElhinney and Lynn surviving, it's clear that Chayka also values a bit of familiarity and doesn't want to completely strip the team of people who have helped them along the way. McElhinney has been Director of Goaltending since 2023-24 meanwhile Lynn has been with the team as a Director of Team Services and a Director of Team Operations.

There's trust there and with McElhinney being someone who is at least in part responsible for the development of Artur Akhtyamov as well as the promising goaltending of Dennis Hildeby and Joseph Woll is good news for a team whose goaltending situation needs a mind like McElhinney's.

The focus was more on improving Toronto's scouting department, providing a new and more analytical approach to roster construction, a new medical team, and trying to instil a different culture in the front office. McElhinney and Lynn were important and also not a priority in terms of change - there were bigger things at hand.

John Chayka didn't tear down the Maple Leafs quietly, but came in and made move after move that cemented him as the leader of a new era. That pattern suggests he was far more interested in rebuilding how Toronto evaluates players than rebuilding everything - but it was done with the best intentions in mind.
