Alex Ovechkin's Message Has Maple Leafs Fans Thinking About Auston Matthews

Alex Ovechkin is hoping that one day he will get to see his goal-scoring record broken and congratulate whoever did it, which might lead some to think about who it may be.
In what was once thought to be an unbreakable record,
Alex Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer with 897 goals. It was a monumental moment celebrated by all, as Ovechkin's dominance and legacy is unmatched in history.
The Great Eight wants to celebrate when, not if, his record is broken
Gretzky was on hand to see the occasion and took the time to congratulate Ovechkin for breaking his record, knowing one day it might be bested. But Ovie took it all in stride, and was sure to be gracious to all his teammates for getting him there.
His humble nature continued, as he mentioned that one day he wants to be in Gretzky's shoes and congratulate whoever breaks his record:
God willing, I will be there to congratulate that player just like Gretzky congratulated me.
To put things into perspective, the person in second place on the active list is
Sidney Crosby, with 625; yes, he's still 273 goals away from breaking it which means he needs to average 27 goals and play for another decade.
Gretzky...Ovechkin...Matthews?
Currently there are two players who are young enough to pace and perhaps beat the record, that being
Auston Matthews and
Leon Draisaitl; Matthews has 401, Draisaitl has 399.
Matthews needs 497 goals to break the record, and he's going to be 28 heading into this season. If we say he continues to play until he is 40, that gives him 12 years.
On average, Matthews would need 41.5 goals every season until then, though if he's able to get back to his 50-60 goal pace then that makes the timeframe a little shorter.
Is that possible? Sure, but he needs to avoid injury for the next decade, and Draisaitl may have an advantage playing alongside
Connor McDavid (for now at least).
To be fair to Matthews, he has only hit below 40 goals three times in his career, with this season being his worst with 33. Knowing how much extra responsibility he'll have without
Mitch Marner, he could take the reins and run with them.
But we're still a long ways away, and Matthews is going to have to get things started right away come this October.
For now though, we'll let Ovie celebrate his remarkable accomplishments, and from the sounds of things:
He's not done yet.
