A former MLSE CEO just publicly criticized Keith Pelley and the words he used cut deeper than any fan critique

Former MLSE CEO Richard Peddie blasted Keith Pelley for his hands-on approach and implored him go back to his office and let others do their jobs.
Right now, one of the most unpopular people in the City of Toronto is no doubt MLSE CEO Keith Pelley. From his grating personality that shone through heavily in their recent press conference to his usage of AI (that he vehemently denies) - he's public enemy number one for Maple Leafs fans.
That criticism is well-earned and for a guy who was so supposedly 'hands-off' and someone who 'didn't want to just sell jerseys', the onus on raising prices, slashing benefits and initiating complete control over the decision-making; he's anything but.
Richard Peddie ran MLSE for over a decade and his criticism of Keith Pelley is the most damning yet
Which is why it's a breath of fresh air that the latest criticism comes from a fan of the team, but someone who knows better than anyone about the shoes he's filling.
Former MLSE CEO Richard Peddie was on Leafs Morning Take and when asked about Pelley was not exactly too kind to his future successor.
Peddie targeted Pelley's constant media appearances and stressed that if he was back in charge then it would be even less exposure than he previously had:
I agree he's been too much. I was never even in the room when there was a trade discussion. Still only in this job for a year; running the Argos is nothing like running one of the biggest in the world.
I did not have as much media exposure as Keith has had recently. If was I doing it over, I'd have far less. You're a suit...stay in the corner office, talk to your general managers.

That right there is an instant damning critique of Pelley's work ethic and for Peddie to come out strongly against his philosophy is striking to say the least.
Peddie spent 13 years as MLSE CEO, running things from 1998-2011 and was his hands-off approach certainly benefited the team as it's still the most successful the team has been recently.
Telling Pelley to smile for cameras, stay quiet and let the actual minds do the work is what every fan wants to tell him - thankfully Peddie has the resume to do so for us.
Pelley's media exposure has been an unmitigated disaster and Peddie just reinforced that
But that his horrible introductory press conference with John Chayka where he verbally spat with Steve Simmons was bizarre but he also decided to target Gino Reda for some reason (he asked him of all people if he knew all the players in the league.)
Yes Keith, he does. He's worked for TSN for nearly 40 years, anchored over 3,000 TV shows, runs 'That's Hockey'....oh and he has a weekly radio show covering the entire CHL. Get off your high horse.
Peddie at the press conference would have likely been grilled just the same but at least he would offer some level of transparency, and he certainly isn't arrogant enough to talk down and condescend.
Pelley has been MLSE CEO Since 2024 so is he fairly inexperienced? Yes, and running European Golf won't help you run the biggest hockey team in the world. He also runs five other sports teams, and three other e-sports teams. The man has a lot on his plate.
Maybe that's a sign then he needs step away and let the two guys he just hired do the hard work for him so he doesn't lose his mind (and neither do fans).
Peddie was honest when asked if he'd do what Pelley's done:
Today? Richard Peddie wouldn't be out there.
Perhaps Pelley should listen to his predecessor and just stay away from the spotlight.
